Bharat New Car Assessment Program-A Boon for Road Safety

Bharat New Car Assessment Program-A Boon for Road Safety

On Type Approved motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight less than 3.5 Tonnes, manufactured or imported in the country, in compliance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS)-197, as revised from time to time, this regulation is in effect for those vehicles.

The standard is in line with global benchmarks, and it goes above and above the bare minimum set by law.

In order to provide consumers an idea of how safe their car is, Bharat NCAP will evaluate the vehicle in the categories of occupant safety –

(a) Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

(b) Child Occupant Protection (COP) and

(c) Safety Assist Technologies (SAT).

In accordance with the requirements of AIS 197, the vehicle’s star rating will range from one to five stars.

Passenger automobile safety ratings are included in this guide, which enables consumers to make educated judgments. It will boost the country’s automotive industry’s ability to export its vehicles, as well as the confidence of the country’s consumers in these vehicles.

To get higher safety ratings, manufacturers will be encouraged by the initiative to implement cutting-edge safety solutions.

In accordance with CMVR 1989 Rule 126, cars for this program will be tested at Testing Agencies equipped with the requisite infrastructure. It will come into effect on April 1, 2023.
